The Major Decision Framework
Parents need a framework for major soccer decisions. High school, academy, boarding, and overseas decisions should all pass through the same filter. Step 1: Define the Problem What problem are we trying to solve? Examples: Need better competition Need more exposure Need stronger training Need a different culture Need college recruiting support Need a professional environment Need independence Need a reset Need joy Need leadership If there is no defined problem, the opportunity may be status-driven. Step 2: Define the Product What exactly is being offered? Do not accept vague labels. Write the product in plain English. Example: “This is a three-month overseas training program with friendly matches, housing, and no guaranteed trial or contract.” That is clearer than: “European pathway.” Step 3: Verify the Claims What must be verified? League status Club relationship Coach Schedule Cost Roster role High school rules Eligibility Visa Academics Medical support Housing Advancement history Exit plan Step 4: Evaluate the Player Is the player ready? Consider: Soccer level Physical readiness Emotional maturity Independence Academic stability Health Motivation Resilience Communication skills A player can be talented and still not ready. Step 5: Evaluate the Family Can the family support this? Consider: Cost Travel Time School logistics Emotional distance Sibling impact Parent availability Risk tolerance A good opportunity can still be wrong if the family cannot support it. Step 6: Define the Exit Plan What happens if it does not work? Return to old club? Transfer school? Resume academics? Recover from injury? Leave the program? Re-enter recruiting?
