1. What Are Cookies
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. We also use related technologies such as localStorage, sessionStorage, and first-party analytics pings. For simplicity this policy refers to all of these as “cookies.”
2. Categories of Cookies We Use
2.1 Strictly necessary
These are required for the Service to function. They authenticate you, remember your session, and preserve security tokens against cross-site request forgery. You cannot opt out of these cookies without losing access to the Service. Examples: Supabase auth cookies (sb-*), Next.js route cookies.
2.2 Preferences
These remember choices you make, such as theme, language, or recently viewed curriculum unit. They expire within 12 months of last use.
2.3 Analytics
These help us understand how the Service is used — which pages candidates get stuck on, how long review workflows take, which curriculum units generate support questions — so we can improve the program. We aggregate or de-identify this data wherever feasible. We do not use analytics cookies for cross-site behavioral advertising.
2.4 Payment and fraud prevention
Our payment processor (Stripe) sets cookies on its checkout pages to detect fraud and enable payment functionality. These are governed by Stripe's own privacy and cookie notices.
3. Third-Party Cookies
Some cookies are set by services we embed (Stripe for payments, Supabase for authentication). We do not permit those providers to use the cookies for advertising purposes.
4. Your Choices
You can control cookies in several ways:
- Browser settings: most browsers let you refuse all cookies, accept only first-party cookies, or delete cookies on exit. Blocking strictly-necessary cookies will break sign-in and session persistence.
- Do Not Track / GPC: we honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal as an opt-out of analytics where applicable.
- EEA/UK consent banner: if you are in a region that requires it, you will see a banner on your first visit allowing you to accept or reject non-essential cookies; your choice is remembered for twelve months.
5. Retention
Cookie durations vary by category — session cookies expire when you close the browser; persistent cookies typically expire within 13 months of last use. Specific expirations are visible in your browser's developer tools.
6. Changes
We will update this Cookie Policy when our use of cookies changes. When we do, we will bump the version number at the top of this page.
