MLS NEXT and Academy Language
Parents must use precise language. “MLS NEXT” is not specific enough by itself. Families may hear: MLS NEXT Allstate Homegrown Division MLS NEXT Academy Division MLS club academy MLS NEXT Pro “MLS NEXT 2” as informal shorthand Those are not all the same. The official language parents should use is MLS NEXT Academy Division, not “MLS NEXT 2.” If someone uses “MLS NEXT 2,” parents should ask: “Do you mean the MLS NEXT Academy Division?” Then verify. MLS Club Academy vs MLS NEXT Member Club This is a critical distinction. An MLS club academy is operated by an MLS professional club. An independent youth club participating in MLS NEXT competition is not the same thing. Both may be serious environments. Both may provide value. But the operating model is different. Parents must ask: Is this an MLS club academy? Is this an MLS NEXT member club? Which division? Which age group? What is the training schedule? What is the competition schedule? What are the costs? What is the roster size? What is the player’s projected role? What is the advancement history? What happens if the player is not selected again next year? MLS NEXT Pro Is Not Youth Soccer MLS NEXT Pro is not the same as MLS NEXT youth competition. It is a professional development environment above the youth level. Do not let language blur the distinction. Parents should separate: Youth competition Club academy Professional development league First team Each layer has different standards, access, contracts, and implications.
