Scholarships, Roster Limits, NIL, and Changing Rules
This section must be handled carefully. The college sports landscape is changing. Roster rules, scholarship structures, NIL, revenue-sharing, transfer behavior, and school-level implementation can vary. Parents should verify current rules with NCAA resources, the school, the coach, and qualified compliance staff before making eligibility or financial decisions. For schools participating in the House settlement framework, the College Sports Commission roster-limit table lists soccer at 28, but families should not treat that as a universal rule for every program, division, school, or roster situation without verification. (collegesportscommission.org) Scholarships Parents need to understand that soccer scholarships are not simple. Depending on division, school, roster model, budget, and current rules, athletic aid may be limited, partial, unavailable, or structured differently than parents expect. Do not assume: Every player gets money Every roster spot includes aid Every offer is athletic scholarship Every school has the same budget Every coach has the same flexibility A verbal discussion is final A commitment post means full scholarship Ask direct questions when appropriate: Is athletic aid being offered? How much? For how long? Is it renewable? What academic aid is possible? What need-based aid is possible? What is the total cost of attendance? What happens if the player is injured? What happens if the coach leaves? What happens if the player transfers? Roster Limits Roster limits affect recruiting because coaches must manage numbers. But parents should not use one headline to make a decision. Rules may vary by division, school, opt-in status, transition rules, implementation details, and sport-specific interpretation.
