Growth, Maturation, and Injury Risk

Youth players are not small adults. Their bodies are changing. Growth affects coordination, speed, strength, balance, flexibility, injury risk, and confidence. A player who looked sharp three months ago may suddenly look awkward. A player may lose coordination temporarily during a growth spurt. A player may feel tight, sore, or unstable. A player may struggle with body control. Parents often panic. They think the player is regressing. Sometimes the player is just growing. Growth Spurt Problems During growth spurts, players may experience: Reduced coordination Tight muscles Heel pain Knee pain Hip discomfort Balance issues Increased fatigue Slower movement Higher injury risk Frustration Loss of confidence This is not the time to blindly increase load. The player may need better warmups, strength support, mobility, rest, and communication with qualified professionals. Overuse Injuries Overuse injuries happen when repetitive stress exceeds recovery. Common risk patterns include: Too many games Too many tournaments Too little rest Hard surfaces Poor footwear Growth spurts Weak strength base Poor movement mechanics Ignoring pain Returning too quickly after injury Parents need to take recurring pain seriously. Pain is information. Do not let a child normalize pain because the schedule is inconvenient. Return to Play Return to play should not be driven by the tournament calendar. It should be driven by health. A player returning too early may compensate, lose confidence, or create a worse injury. Parents should ask: Who cleared the player? What is the return-to-play plan? Is there a minutes restriction? Does the coach know?
