Watching a Training Session
Watching a real training session is one of the best due-diligence tools parents have. Not a tryout. Not a showcase. Not a promotional clinic.A normal training session. Tryouts are artificial. Clubs are on display. Coaches may be more energetic. Players may be more intense. Parents may be sold. Normal training reveals the product. What to Watch Organization Is the session organized? Do players know where to go?Are transitions efficient? Is equipment ready? Is the coach prepared?Does the session flow? Disorganization wastes development time. Player Activity Are players active, or are they standing in lines? Standing happens sometimes. But if players spend half the session waiting, that is a problem. Good sessions maximize touches, decisions, movement, and repetition. Coaching Detail Does the coach actually coach? Listen for specific feedback. Weak: “Good.” “Work harder.” “Quicker.” “Better.” “Come on.” Better: “Open your body before receiving.” “Check your shoulder before the pass travels.” “Create a better angle.” “Delay the attacker until cover arrives.” “Receive across your body.” “Recognize when to play forward.” Specific coaching matters. Game Relevance Does the session connect to the game? Not every activity must look exactly like a match. But the coach should know why the activity matters. Ask yourself: What game problem is being trained? Does the exercise create decisions? Is there pressure? Is there progression? Does the coach connect it back to matches? Player Engagement Are players focused? Do they listen?Do they compete?Do they respond to correction?Do they look afraid?Do they look bored?Do they look invested?
