The Club Scorecard

Parents need a tool because emotions distort memory. After a conversation with a charismatic coach, everything feels good. After a bad game, everything feels bad. After another parent criticizes the club, doubt grows. After a social media post from another club, the grass looks greener. The scorecard forces structure. A scorecard does not make the decision for you. It shows where the decision is strong and where it is weak. The Six Categories Development Is the player improving? Score training, feedback, coach quality, technical/tactical learning, and player progress. Competition Is the player challenged appropriately? Score league level, game quality, minutes, role, and tournament purpose. Communication Is the club clear? Score schedule, fees, evaluation, parent expectations, and responsiveness. Economics Is the cost justified? Score full cost, hidden fees, travel, required extras, and value. Culture and Safety Is the environment healthy? Score coach conduct, parent culture, player behavior, injury handling, and safeguarding. Outcomes and Fit Does the club fit the player’s next step? Score player role, goal alignment, development pathway, academic compatibility, and realistic opportunities. How to Use the Scorecard Use it: Before joining a club Mid-season Before tryouts After a coaching change When considering a move After a major conflict Before renewing Do not use it only when angry. Use it when calm. Scorecard Rule A club does not need to be perfect. But the weaknesses must be visible and manageable. If a club scores poorly in safety, culture, or development, be careful.
