The Parent’s Due Diligence Questions
Due diligence means inspecting before buying. Not after. Before. Parents need a standard set of questions for every soccer opportunity. The questions change slightly depending on the product, but the framework stays the same. Category 1: Product Clarity Ask: What exactly are we buying? What is included? What is not included? What is guaranteed? What is possible but not guaranteed? What is the timeline? Who is responsible for delivery? If the seller cannot explain the product, do not buy. Category 2: Player Fit Ask: What type of player is this for? Does my player fit the level? What role do you see for my player? What are the main gaps my player must close? What would success look like in this environment? What would make this environment a poor fit? The last question is important. A serious seller can tell you who the product is not for. Category 3: Development Process Ask: How are players evaluated? How often is feedback given? Is there a development plan? Who gives feedback? What happens if the player is not progressing? How are goals set? How is progress measured? If the answer is only “trust the process,” ask them to define the process. Category 4: Economics Ask: What is the listed cost? What is the estimated all-in cost? What expenses are optional? What expenses are required? What is the refund policy? What happens if the player is injured? Are there extra camps, events, or fees? Money should be visible.
