Parent-Coach Boundaries

Boundaries protect everyone. They protect the coach from constant emotional access. They protect the parent from over-involvement.They protect the player from being caught between adults. Boundaries Parents Should Respect Do Not Confront After Games After games, coaches are managing players, emotions, equipment, officials, and next steps. It is not the time for serious conversations. Do Not Discuss Other Players Never make your child’s case by attacking another player. Do not say: “My child is better than that player.” That damages trust. Do Not Demand Tactical Control You can ask about your child’s development. You do not get to manage formation, substitutions, or team strategy. Do Not Use Money as Leverage for Minutes Paying fees gives access to the environment. It does not buy playing time. Do Not Coach From the Sideline That is not support. It is interference. Do Not Make the Private Coach the Authority Over the Club Coach A private coach can help the player develop. They should not become the parent’s weapon in club politics. Do Not Expect Immediate Response at All Times Coaches should communicate professionally, but they are not 24-hour customer service. Boundaries Coaches Should Respect This is not one-sided. Coaches should also have standards. They should not: Humiliate players Ignore safety Mislead families Hide major costs Retaliate against players for parent questions Communicate inappropriately Blur adult-child boundaries Promise things they cannot control Avoid all feedback Create fear-based environments Parents are allowed to expect professionalism. Boundary Rule Respecting boundaries does not mean accepting poor treatment.
