The Spending Decision Framework

Every meaningful soccer expense should pass through a decision framework. This prevents emotional spending. Step 1: Identify the Problem What problem are we trying to solve? Examples: The player needs stronger competition. The player needs more technical repetition. The player needs recruiting exposure. The player needs a better coach. The player needs more confidence. The player needs rest. The player needs academic balance. The player needs a clearer role. If there is no problem, do not manufacture one. Step 2: Identify the Product What exactly are we buying? Examples: Club membership Private training Tournament Showcase ID camp Recruiting service Video service Strength program Overseas trip Boarding academy Be specific. Step 3: Identify the Evidence Why do we believe this product solves the problem? Evidence may include: Coach recommendation Player assessment Roster opportunity Event attendance list School fit Development plan Past outcomes Observed training quality Direct communication from college staff Medical recommendation Workload data If there is no evidence, you are guessing. Step 4: Identify the Full Cost Include: Fee Travel Hotel Food Equipment Missed school Missed work Fatigue Stress Opportunity cost The full cost is always bigger than the invoice. Step 5: Identify the Alternative What else could we do with the same money, time, and energy? Could the same money buy: Better private training? Rest and recovery? Academic tutoring? Strength training? Fewer but better events? A different club? A video package? Nothing, because the family needs financial breathing room? Alternatives matter.
