What Money Cannot Buy

Now the hard part. Money cannot buy the things parents most want. Money Cannot Buy Playing Time Playing time is usually earned through performance, fit, trust, team needs, health, training behavior, tactical understanding, and coach judgment. A fee does not guarantee minutes unless the program explicitly says it does. Parents need to ask about playing time policies before joining. Some developmental environments may try to balance minutes at younger ages. Older and more competitive environments may not. The parent must know what they are entering. If the club says playing time is earned, believe them. Do not act shocked later when the player has to compete. Money Cannot Buy Development This is uncomfortable but true. Parents can buy access to development resources. They cannot buy development itself. Development requires: Player effort Attention Repetition Feedback Time Recovery Mistakes Coachability Game application Patience Desire If the player does not want to improve, money will not save it. If the player only trains when forced, money will not save it. If the player refuses feedback, money will not save it. If the environment is poor, money may be wasted. Development is not purchased. It is built. Money Cannot Buy Toughness Parents often try to purchase confidence or toughness through more training, harder leagues, or bigger events. That rarely works by itself. Toughness develops through appropriate challenge, failure, accountability, recovery, and ownership. If parents rescue the player from every setback, they weaken toughness. If parents blame the coach after every benching, they weaken toughness.
